The Chestnut mushroom (Pholiota adiposa), is in the same family as the Nameko. This clustering, wood loving mushroom forms dense clusters of beautiful, dark orange gilled mushrooms with a slightly shaggy cap, without the slime layer Namekos have. Since they prefer cooler temperatures these mushrooms typically take 2-3 weeks to mature once they start to fruit from baby primordia. An easy mushroom to grow, it can fruit two to three times several weeks apart. The entire mushroom is edible with the exception of the very bottom of the cluster where it attaches, which is a little tough.

Adding this agar culture to our sterilized rye grain will produce high quality grain spawn that can be used to inoculate a wood based sterilized substrate.

Chestnut (Pholiota adiposa) culture is grown on agar in a parafilm-wrapped 90x20mm petri dish. Our agar is made with agar agar powder which is food grade and has a high gel strength of 900g/cm2. We add light dry malt extract powder to our agar mixture to help promote growth of the mycelium. The malt extract is of the highest quality, sustainably sourced and typically made for brewing
